Shiba Inus are intelligent, independent thinkers. They were bred to hunt independently in mountainous terrain, which means they make decisions on their own. This independence is both charming and challenging for owners.
Positive Reinforcement Works Best
Shibas respond poorly to harsh corrections or dominance-based training. Use treats, praise, and play as rewards. Keep training sessions short (5-10 minutes) and end on a positive note.
House Training
Fortunately, Shibas are naturally clean and usually house train easily. Establish a consistent routine, take your puppy outside frequently, and reward successful outdoor elimination immediately.
Socialization is Critical
Early socialization prevents aggression and fearfulness. Expose your Shiba puppy to various people, dogs, sounds, and environments between 8-16 weeks. Continue socialization throughout their life.
The Famous Shiba Scream
Shibas are known for their high-pitched "scream" — a dramatic vocalization used when excited, displeased, or during grooming. It's normal behavior, not a sign of distress. Stay calm and don't reinforce the behavior with attention.
Managing Stubbornness
When your Shiba refuses a command, don't force it. Redirect their attention, try again later, or make the task more rewarding. Consistency and patience are your best tools.
