Feeding Your Shiba Inu

Proper nutrition is fundamental to your Shiba Inu's health and longevity. These active, compact dogs have specific dietary needs that change throughout their life stages.

Choosing the Right Food

Look for high-quality dog food with real meat as the first ingredient. Shibas do well with formulas designed for small to medium active breeds. Avoid foods with excessive fillers, artificial colors, or by-products.

Portion Control

Adult Shiba Inus typically need 1-1.5 cups of premium dry food daily, divided into two meals. Overfeeding is a common mistake — Shibas can easily become overweight, which stresses their joints.

Feeding Schedule

Puppies (8-12 weeks): 3-4 meals daily. Puppies (3-6 months): 3 meals daily. Adults (1+ years): 2 meals daily. Consistent feeding times help with house training and digestion.

Foods to Avoid

Never feed your Shiba chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, or macadamia nuts. These are toxic to dogs. Also avoid giving table scraps regularly, as human food can upset their digestive system.

Special Dietary Considerations

Shibas are prone to food allergies, particularly to chicken, beef, and wheat. If your dog shows signs of itching, ear infections, or digestive issues, consult your vet about an elimination diet.
