Shiba Inu Health Overview

The Shiba Inu is generally a healthy, robust breed with a lifespan of 12-15 years. However, like all breeds, they are susceptible to certain health conditions. Understanding these risks helps you provide the best preventive care.

Hip Dysplasia

While less common than in larger breeds, hip dysplasia can affect Shibas. This condition occurs when the hip joint doesn't fit properly into the hip socket, causing pain and mobility issues. Maintain a healthy weight and request hip evaluations from breeders.

Allergies

Shiba Inus are prone to environmental and food allergies. Symptoms include excessive scratching, red skin, ear infections, and digestive upset. Work with your vet to identify triggers through elimination diets or allergy testing.

Eye Conditions

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and glaucoma can occur in Shibas. PRA causes gradual vision loss, while glaucoma increases pressure in the eye. Regular eye exams are crucial, especially as your dog ages.

Patellar Luxation

This condition involves the kneecap slipping out of place. It's more common in small breeds and can cause lameness or an abnormal gait. Severe cases may require surgery.

Preventive Care

Schedule annual wellness exams, keep vaccinations current, maintain dental hygiene, and provide regular exercise. Early detection is key to managing most health conditions effectively.
