Shiba Inu Coat Basics
The Shiba Inu has a beautiful double coat — a stiff, straight outer layer and a soft, thick undercoat. This coat provides excellent insulation and is naturally resistant to dirt and odors.
Regular Brushing Routine
Brush your Shiba 2-3 times per week year-round using an undercoat rake or slicker brush. This removes loose hair, distributes natural oils, and keeps the coat healthy.
Coat Blowing Season
Shibas "blow coat" twice yearly — typically in spring and fall. During these 2-3 week periods, they shed their entire undercoat. Brush daily with an undercoat rake and consider a high-velocity dryer to speed up the process.
Bathing
Bathe your Shiba only when necessary — typically every 2-3 months or when visibly dirty. Over-bathing strips natural oils and can cause skin irritation. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo.
Nail Care
Trim nails every 2-3 weeks. Long nails can cause discomfort and affect your dog's gait. If you hear clicking on hard floors, it's time for a trim.
Dental Hygiene
Brush your Shiba's teeth 2-3 times per week with dog-specific toothpaste. Dental disease is common in small breeds and can lead to serious health issues if neglected.
