Dachshund grooming needs vary significantly by coat type. Whether you have a smooth-coated Doxie or a wirehaired one, proper grooming keeps them looking and feeling their best.
Smooth Coat Care
The smooth coat is the easiest to maintain. Brush weekly with a rubber curry brush or soft bristle brush to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. They shed moderately year-round.
Longhaired Coat Care
Longhaired Dachshunds need daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Pay special attention to behind the ears, under the legs, and the feathering on their belly. A slicker brush works best.
Wirehaired Coat Care
Wirehaired Dachshunds have a dense, rough outer coat with a soft undercoat. They need regular hand-stripping (pulling dead hairs) to maintain coat texture. Clipping can soften the coat over time.
Nail Care
Trim nails every 2-3 weeks. Long nails alter a Dachshund's gait and can contribute to back problems. If you hear clicking on hard floors, they're too long.
