For Dachshunds, nutrition isn't just about health — it's about protecting their spine. Every extra pound puts dangerous pressure on their vulnerable back. Proper feeding is one of the most important things you can do for your Doxie.

Choosing the Right Food

Look for high-quality dog food formulated for small breeds. Small-breed kibble is appropriately sized for their short muzzles and provides the right calorie density. Choose formulas with real meat as the first ingredient.

Portion Control

Standard Dachshunds: 1-1.5 cups of premium dry food daily, split into two meals.

Miniature Dachshunds: 0.5-1 cup daily, split into two meals.

Use a measuring cup — never estimate. Dachshunds are expert at begging, but giving in puts their spine at risk.

Weight Management

This is the single most important nutritional consideration for Dachshunds. Obesity is the leading preventable cause of IVDD. Keep your Doxie lean — you should easily feel their ribs.

[warning]If your Dachshund is overweight, consult your vet before starting a diet plan. Rapid weight loss can be dangerous. Gradual, supervised reduction is the safe approach.[/warning]
