Feeding Your Beagle

Beagles are famously food-motivated — perhaps more than any other breed. This trait makes training easier but also puts them at high risk for obesity. Proper nutrition and portion control are essential.

Choosing the Right Food

Look for high-quality dog food with real meat as the first ingredient. Beagles do well with formulas designed for small to medium active breeds. Avoid foods with excessive fillers or artificial ingredients.

Portion Control is Critical

Adult Beagles typically need 1-1.5 cups of premium dry food daily, divided into two meals. Use a measuring cup — never free-feed. Beagles will eat until they're sick if given the chance.

Treat Management

Limit treats to 10% of daily calories. Use small, low-calorie training treats. Beagles will work hard for food rewards, but too many treats lead to rapid weight gain.

Foods to Avoid

Never feed chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, or macadamia nuts. Beagles are notorious counter surfers — keep all human food out of reach.
