Dogs are incredibly expressive creatures, but they communicate primarily through body language rather than vocalizations. Learning to read your dog's signals is the foundation of a strong, trusting relationship — and it can prevent misunderstandings that lead to stress or even aggression.

Reading the Tail

A dog's tail position tells you a lot about their emotional state:

  • High and wagging fast: Excitement, arousal, or overstimulation — not always happiness
  • Mid-level, loose wag: Relaxed and content — the "happy wag"
  • Low or tucked: Fear, anxiety, or submission
  • Stiff and still, pointed up: Alert, assessing a potential threat
  • Slow, wide wag: Uncertainty or insecurity

Ear Positions

Ear shapes vary by breed, but the general principles apply:

  • Relaxed, slightly back: Calm and comfortable
  • Perked forward: Interested, alert to something
  • Flat against head: Fear or submission
  • One ear forward, one back: Trying to process something confusing

Mouth & Facial Cues

  • Relaxed, slightly open mouth with tongue visible: Content and happy
  • Closed mouth, tense lips: Stress, displeasure, or wariness
  • Yawning (not tired): Stress signal or appeasement
  • Lip licking (not after eating): Nervousness or discomfort
  • Showing teeth with wrinkled nose: Warning — back away

Full Body Posture

  • Play bow (front down, rear up): "Let's play!" — one of the most recognizable signals
  • Stiff body, weight forward: Alert, possibly aggressive
  • Cowering, lowered body: Fear or submission
  • Rolling over exposing belly: Submission or trust (context matters)
  • Shaking off (like after a bath): Stress release — common after uncomfortable situations

Context is Everything

Remember that individual signals must be read in combination and in context. A wagging tail doesn't always mean happy — a stiff, high wag can indicate arousal that might lead to aggression. The whole dog, plus the situation, tells the complete story.

The more you observe and learn your own dog's unique communication style, the deeper your bond will become.
